The Company - About Us

The Company - About Us

Our Company supports the profession of accountancy in its leadership and service to society, industry, commerce and the financial sector, all members being members of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales. As a Livery Company, the Company supports the Lord Mayor of the City of London and the Corporation in maintaining and promoting London as the world's leading international financial centre. The Company seeks to uphold the high ethical and moral standards of the City of London, our profession and of the Livery movement generally.

The Company's motto is True and Fair. Our members are leading accountants and business people from industry, commerce, the financial sectors including professional firms of accountants. The Company provides a forum for leaders in our profession and in industry generally to contribute to and listen to views and opinions on matters of current interest and importance, in a small, confidential grouping. Joining the Company is a privilege which allows Institute members to complement their own views and experience by meeting other senior accountants outside their own business and normal contacts, enabling us to be better informed about the key issues of the moment.

Successful chartered accountants are extremely busy people. Their time is precious. When not working they want to spend time with their family and on their favourite pursuits. Yet leading accountants find that their time contributed to the Company is time well spent with other interesting and effective senior people, enjoyable, informative and fun.

Support for the Lord Mayor of the City of London and the Corporation

Apart from our Master's presence at Livery Company and other City functions, our support for the City is normally shown on traditional and ceremonial occasions, for example, the election of the Lord Mayor on Michaelmas Day and the election of the Sheriffs on Midsummer Day. From time to time, when the incoming Lord Mayor has been one of our Liverymen, the Company has been privileged to enter a carriage in the Lord Mayor's Procession. We always join the procession, usually with the other modern Livery Companies. The Company is a member of the Financial Services Group of Livery Companies which was formed in 2006 with the following objectives:

  • a network for access to expertise, experience and issues to provide briefings for the Lord Mayor for outbound and inbound visits;
  • a source of education in financial affairs and issues for potential Lord Mayors and Sheriffs for all Livery Companies;
  • a source of encouragement for all Livery Companies to seek Liverymen with the potential to be Lord Mayor and other suitable candidates to join the Livery;
  • to represent the views of the Financial services sector to the Lord Mayor.

Community and Charitable Activities

We are the sole Livery Company for the elite Special Boat Service as well as having a special connection with both the Honourable Artillery Company,  the Harrow and Wembley Sea Cadet Unit and 47 Squadron Brize Norton. Our Charitable Trust has built up funds of over £1.5 million. Its investment income, supplemented by regular annual donations from members of the Company, provides around £110,000 each year. The trustees use this to support many a good cause, both at home and abroad, particular focus on education generally, especially numeracy, literacy and accountancy. We provide a bursary to a PhD student researching an accountancy topic. Further details are given on the Charity pages of this website.

Social Events

The year commences with our Installation Church Service in October, immediately followed by the Installation Dinner, when the new Master is formally introduced before the meal, the Master Elect taking the oath "Well and truly to execute the office of Master." Further Livery dinners are held in February and April, usually in Livery Company Halls. In July we are often privileged by the Lord Mayor to hold our Annual Banquet at Mansion House.

Every year the Company holds its own carol service, usually at the Guild Church of St.Martin within Ludgate.

Other social activities, lunches and talks are arranged by the Master, the Clerk and other members of the Company.  The Company participates in Inter-Livery competitions such as golf, bridge, tennis and shooting as well as the Swimathon arranged by the Chartered Surveyors Company.
